Da da da da… Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
May 12th
I (well my wife) finally pre purchased my ticket to see the new Indiana Jones movie. It will be at one of the first public sessions in the world to screen it… considering International Date Line etc, NZ will be the only country to see if before Australia and that the States will start screening it almost 18 hours after Australia has seen it (if not more).
I’ve been reading up about it on theraider.net and know from the rumours and photos a number of plot points…. I’m still looking forward to seeing the movie and know I’m really going to enjoy it.. will post a review once I’ve seen it.
What a weekend…
May 6th
(warning some ‘mild’ technical content)
I flew up to Brisbane to install some new servers in my companies office.
Following is a summary of the weekend… bolded are the things which went wrong
Last thing Wednesday..
- Find out that it’s a Public Holiday in Brisbane on the Monday.
Thursday….
- Plane departed 5 minutes late.
- Landed and decided to catch the train instead of a cab… beats the traffice, except I got off at the wrong stop and had to walk about 1 kilometer to the office. I got the stops confused because in the past I stayed at a hotel literally above the station.
- Got to the office and unpacked and ‘racked’ all the hardware.
- Find out a package which had programs on it for me to install on the Friday was sent Off Peak instead of Priority. Later in the day a second package was sent from Melboure
- Found out some network cards which we had originally ordered and were due to sent back couldn’t be found.
- Some of the documentation which I had was different from the way the hardware had been detected so I the documentation had to be updated.
- Installed the main software/OS fine.
- Headed to the hotel and slept.
Friday…
- Got in the office and configured the Disk Array which we are using (ended up taking 3-4 hours to initiate which was lucky as when it finished I was ready to configure the disks.
- Configured the OS/software on the servers. In the process found out that we were almost out of ‘IP Addresses’ for the migration…. this would come back later to cause problems.
- (Technical content) Created a new Domain controller.
- At 6pm (when I had planned on starting the migration), found out that staff in the office work back Friday nights until 7:30pm.
- Decided to finish up at 6 and go for a walk as there was a festival/markets over at Southbank (late night shopping is Friday night in Brisbane city).
- Had a nice walk and took a nice photo (below and is also in the gallery)… this was taken with my wifes camera and was NOT on a tripod..
Saturday…
- Got to the office about 10:30-11… got ready for the rest of the day.
- (Technical content)Had a few problems with DNS when trying to migrate a couple of servers.
- Copied all the files across and had a relatively successful day.
Sunday…
- Had a time frame for our Database server to be down (which also affected part of our website).
- Everything ran smoothly.
- Waited for someone from the office to come in so I could de-rack the servers. Did this with a slight pain in my back.
- After I had done all the ‘danger’ work… where I wanted someone to be there just in case. I continued on packing the servers up and organising the server room. In the process I manged to step on a dangling lead which was the power supply to the office alarm. After a few calls I was able to find out what I had to connect up (as there were 3 leads on one cable and 4 leads on the other… one turned out to be the earth which I didn’t connect.
- Got back to the hotel, found out there was a $10 charge to change Qantas Bookings on fully flexible fares.
- Called and organised a 5:40am wake up call for the next day.
Monday…
- 3:40am…. I get a wake up call from the hotel. I find out later that the person on the reception desk at the hotel couldn’t read the writing of the previous person on duty so called me 2 hours early!!!
- I got back to sleep and wake up by my alarm.
- Got up with a worse pain in my back, showered and headed downstairs, pay for the accommodation and they organise a cab (it arrived in about 2 minutes).
- Got to the airport and had time to sit down and have a coffee. Caught the flight back with no problems.
I will put up a few photos from that trip later.
Here is the take off from Sydney Airport, Aircraft: 767, Runway: 34R (no sound)
Landing at Brisbane Airport, Aircraft 767 (no sound)
Will put a fly past of Sydney and the take off/landing from the homewards bound trip later.
A Driving Experience – Canberra to Sydney
Apr 28th
Last year, I had to drive down to Canberra for work. For me it take about the same amount of time to get a ride to the airport, check in, wait for the plane, fly to Canberra, get off the plane, wait for a cab and get to the office as it does to drive. My wife and son came down for the day as she has a few friends down there and we ended up having dinner with a couple of them.
After dinner we started on the journey back to Sydney. We left Canberra about 9pm. My wife starts to drive. I’m in the passenger seat watching cars fly past, I lean over to see that she’s driving about 10-20 klms under the speed limit, closer to 20 than 10 (a quick calculation in my head worked out that it would add at least 30 minutes to the total drive back to Sydney). She said she wasn’t comfortable driving any faster, which was fine by me, however I wanted to get back quicker.
She had only been driving for about 10 minutes when I told her to pull over and I would drive the rest of the way. (The complete drive is close to 3 hours).
So the first half of the drive was nice and quick, not much traffic. We stop at about 10:30pm for petrol/drunks/snacks/toilet break.
After the quick stop got back on the Freeway back to Sydney. I couldn’t see any headlights in the rear view mirror or any parking lights of cars in front. If felt like we were the only car on the road.
Due to road work, part of the Freeway was One Lane, and due to work going on the speed limit was reduce down to 70klms/h (normally 110klms). I do know that police patrol that area and also use Radar guys, so as I always do, I slowed down the 70klms/h. The road works were maybe 5 kilometers or longer.
Part way along driving down the road works I noticed headlights coming up fast in the read view mirror. It got to the point where I felt like I had to accelerate otherwise I would be hit. There was a Semi-trailer pulling (from memory), 2 trailers. He remained a couple of meters off my bumper bar for the remainder of the road works. I couldn’t keep to 70klms/h as I felt like if I got down to that speed he might possibly hit out car… and with my wife and son on board I didn’t want that… my wife was awake at the time and witnessed all of this.
When I got to the end of the road works I got up to speed as quickly as I could to put some distance between the truck and myself.
Once the truck got up to speed, he started to speed. I could see him coming closer and closer behind me in the rear view mirror. He get up really to us and changes lanes and over takes us. I would say he was easily doing 150klms/h. Our car swerved with the wake he was creating.
At that point, in the distance I could see another truck, we had caught up to it as it was doing just under the speed limit. The truck which overtook us, overtook this truck in about 30 seconds – 1 minute. As he passed you could see the other truck flash this driver as it to say “You have to be kidding”.
It took me about 5 minutes to catch the truck that he overtook (to give you an idea of how fast he was actually going). This might sound strange, however I feel like you can talk to other drivers through your driving. I felt like the driver of the overtaken truck kind of patted me on the back and said, “don’t worry, that guy was an ass.”
Over the next 15 minutes I gradually pulled away from that truck and eventually caught the other truck. At all times I was doing the speed limit (just shows you how much he slowed down). It then took 5-10 minutes to overtake him. There was still very few cars around, however there were a few on the road as we were getting closer to Sydney.
I would come up beside him and then he would start to accelerate (breaking the speed limit) so I couldn’t pass him. He did this a couple of times, all the time I maintained the speed limit. At this time both the wife and son were asleep in the car.
I think it got to the point where he realised that all I was doing was the speed limit at all times… and he eventually slowed down just a little to let me past. Over the next 15-20 minute I gradually pulled away from him. At this time we were getting closer to suburbia and the traffic was increasing. All off a sudden in the rear view mirror I see him again weaving between cars like you would see a hoon in a sports car drive. He comes flying up behind me again getting closer to my bumper then all of a sudden exits the Freeway on a Ramp and goes flying past me. I’d say he missed the car by about 1 m or so.
I don’t think I have ever been afraid driving ever as I was that night driving home from Canberra.
Short and Sweet
Jan 5th
Finally getting my study (studio) into a working state. Built an Ikea box, I mentioned in a previous post, to put my PC in… has reduced the amount of noise the computer is making for when I record.
Haven’t posted much cause I haven’t had too much to say… and I haven’t been doing much… I’m going to put up some goals for the next year on this site so I can keep a track of my goals for the next year.
Second hurdle?
Nov 12th
Well… there was the First Hurdle, however in a track race there is always more than one hurdle.
First question would be how did I get over the First Hurdle? Easy… I went around it. I’m not going to be using that set up to do most of the recording. Whilst I have a laptop for portable recording. I have a desktop at home sitting there doing nothing other than a storage box.. The application I was going to use initially on my laptop I’m no longer using, I’m using a better program. Now, in removing one noise, I’m created another..
Do you realise how loud some of the old desktop machines are… In the desktop there are 5 fans I can think of off the top of my head… CPU, Video Card, Power Supply, Front Intake, Back Outtake.. actually make that 6… BIOS fan. Now I replaced a BIOS fan and that made a huge difference… I will eventually replace the other fans, however I’ve found something that reduces the noise the box is producing… putting the computer inside a cupboard… I’ll find a link to the cupboard and will write up a post on how it all goes together.. and of course finally sound reduction.
I’ll get that, sound proof the inside of the box and that should get rid of most of the noise the box is making… granted it increases the size of the box… but the noise reduction is worth it!
So that will be a project in a few weeks…
